Mice

House Mouse

(Mus musculus)

Appearance
• 7-9.5cm in length, with tail about the same.
• 12-30g in weight.
• Relatively small feet and head and large eyes and ears distinguish them from a young brown rat (Rattus norvegicus).

Lifestyle
• Usually ground living and burrowing, but a good climber.
• Seek the warmth and shelter of buildings for nesting sites and food.
• Preferred food is cereals.
• Will eat around 3g of food per day and can survive without any additional water. They will drink up to 3ml a day if their diet is particularly dry.

 Signs of mouse activity include:
• Scratching noises in walls or ceilings.
• Small, dark rod-shaped droppings, particularly along walls, in cupboards or under sinks.
• Distinctive ammonia-like smell (from their urine trails).
• Damage to wood, plastic, cables and other hard materials.
• Nests (built with shredded material such as newspaper and fabric) found in hidden places e.g., in cupboards or behind fridges.

Overview
Mice can cause extensive damage to property as a result of their gnawing activities. They can gnaw through cables and wires and gas and water pipes, and have been known to cause electrical fires and floods. They transmit a range of diseases, including severe food poisoning, by contaminating food or surfaces with droppings and urine. As such, mice can be a serious health risk, particularly in kitchens or areas where children play.
