Enviroguard and the Environment

Cleaner and greener

Just because a particular pest threat may cause great annoyance or anxiety, for example the growing problem of mosquitoes and the possible public health implications (see #mosquitocontrol), it doesn't mean we have to use ever more aggresive methods and pesticides. In line with our desire to, at all times, minimise our impact on non-target species and the surrounding environment, Enviroguard will always choose, as a first resort, non-chemical methods to eradicate your pest problem. These may include: clearing of habitat, food source removal, building repairs; traditional bird and rodent 'proofing' preventative measures; fitting fly screens and electric fly-killing machines; and natural methods, such as hawk flying. Enviroguard also specialises in hi-tech environmentally friendly pest control solutions, such as non-chemical treatments for moths, mosquitoes and ants, and intelligent electronic bait stations. In the situations where pesticides have to be used, we will always chose the least toxic, most environmentally compatible materials available.

Enviroguard Moth Control

Brown House MothEnviroguard is the sole UK distributor for the Exosect Clothes Moth System, a pesticide-free mating disruption system designed specifically to control the highly destructive larvae of the clothes moth. The system has a high safety profile, causing no entry restrictions or disruption in the workplace. Enviroguard is currently contracted to carry out this system of moth control by the Royal National Theatre.

• A species-specific synthetic female pheromone to attract the male moths into a dispenser where Exosex Entostat powder, combined with the pheromone, is situated.

• Males are lured to the dispensers where the powder sticks to their bodies. The senses of the coated moths are overwhelmed and they cannot detect females.

• As they leave the dispenser, they too attract other males, thus spreading the confusion effect even further and disrupting their ability to breed.

Enviroguard Bird Control

Harris hawk pigeon control• We have our own team of very experienced bird-proofing installers, employing nets or blunt spikes to prevent roosting, together with guano clearance and decontamination. All droppings are removed and carried via our licensed correct waste-disposal procedure.

Enviroguard also has its own team of three Harris hawks cared for by our fully qualified pest-control
technician who flies them daily for business and pleasure. The hawks are fully trained for feral pigeon control, and numerous buildings - from office blocks in towns and cities to churches and hospitals - now rely on our regular flights to deter pigeons (and other species) from roosting and breeding.

• All our marksmen are trained, licensed and equipped with the most up-to-date, silenced gas-powered rifles.

Enviroguard Mosquito Control

Mosquito larva• Global warming has led to increased mosquito numbers, especially in southern parts of Britain. With some experts predicting that large parts of the country could soon be at risk from malaria, particularly around river estuaries, low-lying wetlands and marshes, Enviroguard is at the forefront of non-chemical mosquito control.

• Britain is currently malaria free, but the disease was once common in many parts of the UK - where it was known as 'ague' or  'marsh fever' - and was a leading cause of death in many marsh communities between the 16th and 19th centuries.

• To deal with a mosquito problem near your business premises, recreational facility or home, we will spray a non-chemical insect growth regulator - such as VectoBac® - into the water where the adult insects lay their eggs. The growth regulator is specifically aimed at the mosquito larvae, halting their development and preventing them from emerging as biting adults.

• VectoBac® is based on the naturally occurring active ingredient Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) - highly effective, yet perfect for environmentally sensitive application sites. This procedure is absolutely harmless to all other species, and can be applied to pooling brackish water, marsh fields or stagnant pools without endangering the surrounding wildlife.

Enviroguard has also been controlling pharaoh's ants for more than 30 years without insecticidal sprays.

• With experience gained from hospital pest control, we now simply administer a growth hormone bait which stops the ants' natural development, meaning the colony will die out naturally without risk to non-target species or the surrounding environment.

Enviroguard Electronic Bait Station

Brown rat• Technology plays a large part in our commitment to the environment. We are currently involved in the further development of intelligent electronic bait stations that detect the presence of insects or rodents via an infrared sensor, then transmit a signal back to a base control and our office to indicate activity.

• This system reduces the number of routine visits required by a technician - with all associated environmental costs - while offering 24/7 continual monitoring of pest activity in high risk areas without the precautionary application of residual pesticides, and their ensuing impact on the surrounding environment.
